Alumni Review: Ryan Tay, Entertainment Business Management (2009)

Ryan Tay graduated from the twelve-month Entertainment Business Management Program in March 2009. Recently, he reviewed his time at our Institute and shared his thoughts about the program.

When discussing the value of the program to potential students Ryan said, “The program taught me everything I need to know about the entertainment industry.” Tay added, his education at Metalworks gave him real-world insight on how things worked, what managers do and what labels do, and in an age when the music business is changing so rapidly, it prepared him well.

Last February, Ryan interned at Curve Music, Cerberus Artist Management and Music Managers Forum Canada, under Brian Heatherman. Shortly after his internship, Heatherman, Founder of all three companies, hired Tay fulltime. He said, “Ryan proved himself to be a major asset to the company. He was put in charge of all online development and marketing for our artists – he had the industry knowledge necessary to independently and successfully fulfill any task we threw his way.”

Ryan currently works at UrArtist Network, which is a group of music industry professionals who work to provide “resources, services and facilities for the development and promotion of artists, bands, and support crew.”

Tay describes UrArtist Network as a 360 degree company that works with managers and labels. The company works to ensure success in the ever-changing landscape of the music industry today.

The Institute was recommended to Ryan Tay by a friend, while he was enrolled as an Engineering student at McMaster University. “Metalworks offered me a way into the music industry,” said Tay. Today, Tay is immersed in the industry.

In his role at UrArtist Network he handles all the company’s online marketing, web development and graphic design. He attends music conferences and festivals, to network with people in the music industry and promote UrArtist Network. We wish Ryan all the best in his new and exciting career in the Entertainment Industry!
