Event Recap – Backstage Pass with Jully Black
Our inaugural Backstage Pass held on January 23rd welcomed Canada’s “Queen of R&B,” Jully Black! The event took place in the South Auditorium from 7:30pm to 8:30pm EST and was available for live online stream. Black was welcomed by a packed audience filled with our students, fans and music enthusiasts. Black was accompanied on stage by producer, YoungPete Alexander and guitarist, Andrew Thompson.
The trio started the evening with a knock-out performance with a cover of the Etta James classic, “Seven Day Fool.” The evening was hosted by Music Performance and Technology program Vocal Instructor, Wendy Irvine, who wandered through the crowd with live audience questions, live chat questions, as well as her own. Black spoke about her journey through the industry, her rise to fame and her biggest influences. YoungPete Alexander and Andrew Thompson also gave their insight on the industry, its hurdles and the importance of education. Black spoke about her new, soon to be released album, (8)IGHT and the new sound that she, with help from her team, has created for herself.
The night closed with a very powerful performance and the chance of a lifetime for one little girl to jump on stage with Jully! This MWI Backstage Pass showcased to a packed house not only Jully’s unbelievable musical gift, but also how down-to-earth, insightful and hilarious the Canadian powerhouse truly is.
A very big thank you to Jully, YoungPete Alexander, Andrew, Wendy and the fantastic audience for an unforgettable Backstage Pass!
