Alumni Update: Katie Morris, Audio Production & Engineering and Entertainment Business Management

We would like to congratulate Katie Morris on her new position as Royalties Coordinator at Sony Music Canada. Katie graduated from both the Audio Production & Engineering and Entertainment Business Management Diploma Programs in 2014/2015 and has been working full-time in the music business ever since. Prior to her new position at Sony, Katie worked at companies including Number 9 Audio Group, Coalition Music, Blackbox Music, and CMRRA.

When we last checked in with Katie for an update she was working full-time as an Online Licensing Administrator at CMRRA and she now brings that knowledge and experience to her new job at Sony. As a Royalties Coordinator, Katie’s work is essential for making sure that artists get paid. She enjoys the work, telling us,

“I absolutely love knowing that I am helping songwriters, artists and producers to rightfully get paid for the music they worked so hard on putting out.”

On a day-to-day basis, Katie is responsible for ensuring that publishers’ royalty shares and rates are accurate and up-to-date; she reviews artists and producer contracts and updates the royalty system based on those terms; she initiates license requests for new releases; reviews publishing information; and responds to publishers’ queries on their products.

Now that she has a few years of music industry experience behind her, we asked Katie ‘What has been the most helpful aspect of your Metalworks education?’ and this is what she had to say:

“Besides the insane amount of knowledge that you learn in 1-2 years, it would have to be the instructors themselves.” She then followed up with some advice for current students, “Don’t take [your instructors] for granted and definitely reach out to them for help and support.”

Katie also spoke about the importance of perseverance,

“Don’t get too discouraged if you don’t land something right away. Just always keep applying and make your name known. I applied to Sony Music Canada almost a year and a half ago for this position and I didn’t get it the first round. When the position became available again, I gave it another shot, and it was the best thing that happened to me.”

Katie signed off by encouraging students to make the most of their time at Metalworks, “Really take in and enjoy everything while you’re at Metalworks, the year will absolutely fly by!”
