A Journey from Metalworks to the World Stage

In the evolving world of live sound engineering, one of our recent graduates is making waves on an international scale. After completing two transformative years at Metalworks Institute, Ty Begley (Audio Production & Engineering 2023 and Music Mixing & Mastering 2024), has transitioned from classroom learning to the thrilling demands of touring with renowned pop band Walk Off The Earth.

While on tour with Walk Off The Earth in the U.S., Ty took on a multifaceted role, working as an in-ear monitor mixer, assisting with stage setup, and handling gear for the band. Despite the intense nature of live sound—something quite new to him— Ty quickly adapted, embracing 17-hour days and mastering the use of an Allen & Heath Monitor mixer on a Shure playback rig during shows.  This hands-on experience proved to be important for Ty, solidifying his confidence in the field.

Reflecting on his journey, Ty emphasizes the significant impact of his education. When asked about the most beneficial part of his Metalworks education, Ty highlighted the technical skills he gained, along with his newfound ability “to not second guess myself anymore” and “to be able to actually hold myself to a standard and know I’m good enough”. Ty credits Metalworks Institute instructors Wayne, Alf, Chris, and Lenny, for instilling a sense of self-assurance in him that has helped to propel his career forward.

Looking ahead, Ty is gearing up for an exciting European tour with Walk Off The Earth in October, visiting major cities such as Paris, Madrid, Barcelona, London, and Berlin.

Ty's advice to current and future students: “Just be a sponge. No matter what level you're at, being you and wanting to learn will get you much farther than someone who may be more technically accurate.”

We are incredibly proud of Ty and look forward to watching his continued success on the world stage!
