TO THE GRADUATING CLASS OF 2019,

Congratulations on reaching this significant milestone in your lives! Your graduation not only underscores an achievement in your educational journey; but also makes your ability to remain committed to exalted goals and admirable ambitions, while successfully overcoming a demanding courseload and intense curriculum. This innate drive serves as a true testament to your determination to succeed, and it is this spirit which will carry you through your career and allow you to rise above the inevitable trials that lie ahead as you grow in the industry. Ultimately, sitting in this room tonight at your graduation ceremony highlights your dedication to a dream.

The landscape of the entertainment business is in ongoing change and evolution; it gives us great joy to know Metalworks Institute graduates have been, and will continue to be, integral in shaping the future of this fantastic industry we call our home. It is with immense pride and satisfaction that the Graduating Class of 2019 uses the knowledge, skills, and contacts developed at Metalworks Institute to turn their dreams into a reality and, we expect, make some history along the way.

VALEDICTORIAN SPEECH

Please welcome the Valedictorian for Metalworks Institute’s Graduating Class of 2019, Derrick Hou.

MENTORSHIP AWARDS

Mentorship awards are presented to graduates who have academically excelled in their program. Recipients will receive a one-on-one mentoring session with a leading music industry professional who has generously donated their time. These awards are intended to inspire each recipient in their career aspirations through the wisdom of an industry veteran.

MENTOR: ALAN CROSS

Alan Cross is an internationally known broadcaster, interviewer, writer, consultant, and speaker. In his 30+ years in the music business, he has interviewed the biggest names in rock, from David Bowie and U2 to Pearl Jam and the Foo Fighters.

Recipient: Mitchell Wildenbeest

MENTOR: ALLAN REID

Allan Reid has been a towering presence in the Canadian music industry for over 25 years. Allan is the former VP of A&R and Marketing for A&M Records and the former Senior VP of A&R for Universal Music Canada. He is now president of CARAS, the organization responsible for the JUNO Awards.

Recipient: Marcus Gapic

MENTOR: ANDY CURRAN

Andy Curran is the bassist, lead-vocalist, and founding member of the bands Caramel, Coney Hatch, and Leisureworld. He has over 25 years of global experience in the music industry including over a decade of experience with Anthem Entertainment Group.

Recipient: Chanel Martins

MENTOR: DAVID BOTTRILL

With three grammy awards and the success of over 15 million albums sold, David Bottrill has produced and mixed career-defining records that have established paradigms and redefined genres. He has worked with artists including Peter Gabriel, Muse, Tool, Rush, King Crimson, and Kid Rock.

Recipient: Thomas Wildish

MENTOR: JACKIE DEAN

Jackie Dean is the COO of the Music Canada and former COO of CARAS – the organization responsible for the Juno Awards and Musicounts. For over 15 years she has worked tirelessly to support develop, celebrate and honour Canadian music and artists.

Recipient: Moira Rainville

MENTOR: JAKE GOLD

Jake Gold is the Director and CEO of The Management Trust. He has been instrumental in the development of notable artists The Tragically Hip, The Watchmen, Big Wreck, Crash Karma, Adam Cohen, and Sass Jordan. Jake is Vice Chairman for the Canadian Independent Music Association (CIMA) and a board member for the Music Managers Forum (MMF).

Recipient: Cassidy Taylor Glecoff

MENTOR: JENNIFER ESSIEMBRE

Jennifer Essiembre is a 2009 graduate of Metalworks Institute. She has since held multiple executive positions in the music business including Senior Manager of Songwriter Relations at Spotify and Director of ole Label Group. She is now based out of LA as the Director of A&R and Management at LVE for Red Light Management. Red Light is the largest independent music management company in the world and their roster features many uniquely talented artists from all genres including: Save Matthews Band, Luke Bryan, Lionel Richie, Enrique Iglesias, Dierks Bentley, ODESZA, Chris Stapleton, Lady Antebellum, Alabama Shakes, and Phish.

Recipient: Madelynn Anes

MENTOR: KARDINAL OFFISHALL

Kardinal Offishall is a legendary Canadian Rapper, Record Producer, and Record Executive. Kardy's 2008 album 'Not For Sale' was certified 3x Platinum in Canada. Since 2013 he has been Creative Executive Director of Universal Music Canada's A&R Team.

Recipient: Vinicius Paz De Oliveira Ponciano

MENTOR: KATRINA GALBRAITH

Katrina is a Galbraith 2012 graduate of Metalworks Institute. She has built her career as an in-demand live sound engineer touring with multiple acclaimed artists including The Tea Party, Walk Off The Earth, Big Wreck, In This Moment, July Talk, and Rival Sons.

Recipient: Lauren Michaels

MENTOR: LENNY DEROSE

Lenny DeRose is a Juno Award winning recording engineer, mix engineer, and producer. He has been credited on numerous recordings dating back to the 80s including Alice Cooper, Gowan, and Celine Dion. More recently, Lenny has worked with Mother Mother, The Tragically Hip, and others.

Recipient: Nathan Jackson

MENTOR: RALPH JAMES

Ralph James was the President of The Agency Group. He personally helped to cultivate the international success of Nickelback, Billy Talent, Three Days Grace, Mariana's Trench, and many others. Ralph is currently head of APA Agency, one of the largest diversified talent agencies.

Recipient: Kennedy Lucas

MENTOR: RANDY LENNOX

Randy Lennox is one of Canada's most accomplished music and entertainment industry executives. He is the President of Bell Media and the Former President & CEO of Universal Music Canada, where he oversaw the careers of Justin Bieber, Drake, Diana Krall, Shania Twain and Bryan Adams.

Recipient: Derrick Hou

MENTOR: STEVE BAIRD

Steve Baird is an acclaimed lighting designer who has toured with numerous artists including Dream Theatre, One Republic, Macklemore, Ryan Lewis, Norah Jones, and Steely Dan. His unique lighting displays have contributed to creating spectacular lighting experiences around the globe.

Recipient: Matthew Wheeler-Mislang

MENTOR: TIM OXFORD

Tim Oxford is a 2005 Graduate of Metalworks Institute and a founding member and drummer for the six-time Juno-Award winning band Arkells. Tim has provided production and percussion work for the band’s multiple studio albums, including their latest hit Rally Cry which won the 2019 Juno Award for Rock Album of the Year.

Recipient: Alexandra Harrison

ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS

Achievement awards are presented to graduates who have demonstrated exceptional academic achievement within a thirty-week, one-year, or two-year program.

ALUMNI AWARD OF MERIT: HARLEY ARSENAULT

In recognition of his work at OVO, engineering and composing for world renowned artists DVSN Drake, and others, as well as his multiple credits on Drake’s multi-platinum certified album Scorpion, Drake’s Gold-Certified EP The Best in the World Pack, and the star-studded 2019 Top Boy Soundtrack.

ALUMNI AWARD OF MERIT: MIKE ASHTON

In recognition of his work in the sound department for multiple award-winning television series including Star Trek Discovery, Cardinal, and Titans. Star Trek Discovery was nominated for four 2019 Emmy awards including Outstanding Sound Design and Titans won the 2019 Canadian Society of Cinematographers Award for Best Cinematography in a TV Drama.

ALUMNI AWARD OF MERIT: RILEY BELL

In recognition of his credits on the 2019 Grammy Nominated duet Best Part by H.E.R and Daniel Caesar and for mixing Jessie Reyez’s Juno Award-winning R&B Soul Recording of the Year Being Human in Public. Riley previously won the JUNO Award for Recording Engineer of the Year and he has worked with many other top tier artists including The Weeknd, the Rolling Stones, The Tragically Hip, Arkells, Passion Pit, One Republic and Ryan Tedder.

ALUMNI AWARD OF MERIT: MIKE BRANDOLINO

In recognition of his success as the guitarist for Valley. Valley’s debut EP This Room is White, amassed over 10 million streams. Plus, their track Swim became an indie pop hit, garnering multiple radio and TV placements including the American TV series ‘Shooter’. Valley’s 2019 Album 'Maybe' has been even more successful, with the song ‘There’s Still A Light In the House’ surpassing 5 million streams.

ALUMNI AWARD OF MERIT: NOEL CADASTRE

In recognition of continued success as Drake’s recording engineer and his multiple credits on Drake’s global record-breaking album Scorpion, Drake’s latest Gold-Certified EP The Best In The World Pack, and the 2019 Top Boy Soundtrack.

ALUMNI AWARD OF MERIT: WAYNE COCHRANE

In recognition of engineering contributions to platinum and gold certified artists including Arkells, City and Colour, Metric, Placebo, Cancer Bats, Lights, Barenaked Ladies, and many others.

ALUMNI AWARD OF MERIT: KEVIN DIETZ

In recognition of recording The Glorious Sons’ 2019 Billboard #1 hit “Panic Attack”. Kevin has worked with numerous chart-topping artists including The Road Heavy, Portugal The Man, DVSN, Placebo, Protest the Hero, Alexisonfire and others, in addition to his work with acclaimed producers Josh Gudwin, Chris Lord-Alge, Nineteen85, David Bottrill, and others.

ALUMNI AWARD OF MERIT: KATRINA GALBRAITH

In recognition of her work as Monitor Engineer for Rival Sons, an accomplished hard rock band who just performed the Black Sabbath tribute at the 2019 Grammy Awards’ Salute to Music Legends. Katrina also mixes for Big Wreck, Walk Off The Earth, In This Moment, July Talk, and The Tea Party.

ALUMNI AWARD OF MERIT: NAVRAJ GORAYA - AKA NAV

In recognition of the success of his two hit albums ‘RECKLESS’ and ‘Bad Habits’. RECKLESS won the 2019 Juno Award for Rap Recording of the Year and debuted at #8 on Billboard’s Top 200, then Bad Habits debuted at #1 on the US Billboard Top 200 Album Chart. NAV also has credits on 4 other 2019 Juno and Grammy Award nominated albums including Travis Scott’s Astroworld, ‘Immigrant’ by Belly, 88Glam, and ‘Love Me Now?’ by Tory Lanez.

ALUMNI AWARD OF MERIT: SHIN KAMIYAMA

In recognition of engineering contributions to multiple platinum and gold certified albums, including the 2019 Juno, Grammy, and Billboard Music Award nominated album ASTROWORLD by Travis Scott, and the 2019 Juno-nominated, 2019 SOCAN Award-winning album My Dear Melancholy by The Weeknd. Shin also has engineering credits on NAV’s acclaimed 2019 albums RECKLESS and Bad Habits, as well as Nicki Minaj’s RIAA Platinum Certified album Queen, and Kendrick Lamar’s US World Albums Billboard #1 Black Panther: The Album.

ALUMNI AWARD OF MERIT: JUSTIN MADILL

In recognition of engineering contributions to the 2019 Juno Award-winning Rock Album of the Year Rally Cry by Arkells. Justin works with acclaimed music producer Eric Ratz, who also won the Jack Richardson Producer of the Year Juno Award for his work on the Rally Cry. Justin’s credit list includes many highly successful rock albums including Sittin' Heavy by Monster Truck, Wild Cat by Danko Jones, and Rush’s 2112 40th Anniversary Edition.

ALUMNI AWARD OF MERIT: DARREN 'JETER' MAGIEROWSKI

In recognition of his engineering credits on Civilinaires by The Trews, and Outsider by Three Days Grace, which were both nominated for Rock Album of the Year at 2019 Juno Awards. Darren has previously been awarded three JUNO Awards for his work with The Sheepdogs, Harrison Kennedy, and July Talk and he has worked alongside world-class producers and engineers Ian Davenport, Julius Buddy, Jim Wert, Eric Ratz, Chris Thorn and Nick Blagona.

ALUMNI AWARD OF MERIT: GREG MOFFETT

In recognition of his continued success with SOTA Studios and OVO Sound and for his contribution to Drake’s global hit record Scorpion. Greg has assistant mixing credits on the album, which includes three of the most successful hip-hop tracks of all time - In My Feelings, Nice For What, and the 2019 Grammy Rap Song of the Year God’s Plan. Greg has also worked with many other top artists including DVSN, Majid Jordan, Gucci Mane, PartyNextDoor, and DJ Khaled.

ALUMNI AWARD OF MERIT: DAVID MOHACSI

In recognition of engineering contributions to True Rockers by Monster Truck, which was nominated for Rock Album of the Year at the 2019 Juno Awards. He has previously co-written, engineered, or produced award winning albums and #1 radio hits for artists including Mother Mother, One Bad Son, Barenaked Ladies, Three Days Grace, League of Wolves, and many others. Dave also co-founded the Artist Management company Inside Pocket Music along with acclaimed record producer Gavin Brown. Inside Pocket’s growing roster includes up-and-coming artists Havelin, Maia, Poesy, Luna Li, Carys, and others.

ALUMNI MERIT AWARD: MATT 'DUTCH' MUDDE

In recognition of his continued success as an in-demand Event Production Manager for some of the largest and most successful festivals and tours in Canada. Matt is now the Manager of Operations for Republic Live, the company that manages Burl’s Creek Event Grounds. He has coordinated numerous major festivals events including the Rolling Stones’ last Canadian show, Boots & Hearts, the I Love 90s Tour, Ever After, and more.

ALUMNI MERIT AWARD: MICHELLE OWEN

In recognition of her continued success in the entertainment business. Michelle Owen is the Tour Manager for the Juno Award-winning band Glorious Sons, who have been playing shows around the world, opening for the The Rolling Stones twice on the No Filter tour – first in Marseilles, France and then in Ontario at Burl’s Creek Event Grounds. Before hitting the road with the Glorious Sons, Michelle was working at Black Box Music. She is also an artist herself and is working on her latest project 'Charlie Mauve'.

ALUMNI MERIT AWARD: TIM OXFORD

In recognition of his continued success as Arkells’ drummer. Arkells received a 2019 CIMA Road Gold Certification for exceeding 100,000 tickets sales domestically and their latest album Rally Cry won the 2019 Juno Award for Rock Album of the Year.
